Why Buy Rock Salt from Egypt? A Guide for Deicing Buyers

Every winter, road agencies and salt distributors in North America and Europe need dependable bulk rock salt. Domestic mines cannot always cover demand after a hard season, so imported salt fills the gap, and Egypt has become one of the main sources.

The Siwa rock salt deposit

Most Egyptian export rock salt comes from Siwa Oasis in the Western Desert. Ghadan identified the commercial potential of the Siwa deposit in 2011 and was the first company to introduce Siwa rock salt to world markets. The halite is extracted from open pits in one of the driest climates on earth, so it reaches the crusher with very low moisture.

Built to the specifications buyers use

Siwa rock salt is crushed and screened to ASTM D632 Type 1 for the USA, and can be graded for CSA requirements in Canada and EN 16811-1 in Europe. Typical sodium chloride content is 98% or higher, with moisture below 1.5%. Anti-caking agent is added to order, and cargoes are inspected and analysed by SGS before loading.

Logistics sized for bulk programmes

Since 1 July 2026 Ghadan loads through Gargoub Port in Matrouh Governorate, the same governorate as our Siwa mine. The shorter haul from mine to vessel supports efficient, high-volume bulk shipments on Handysize and Supramax carriers of roughly 10,000 to 55,000 MT, with full quality control from mine to vessel. Damietta and Alexandria ports, used by Ghadan since 2011, remain available. Ghadan has shipped to discharge ports in the US Northeast, the Great Lakes and Quebec.
